Andrea Fuchs
After studying communication design at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel / Germany, Andrea Fuchs (1966) moved to the Netherlands to continue studying graphic design at ArtEZ in Arnhem.
After graduation she began working as a designer at Studio Dumbar, where she had been involved in many big national and international corporate identity projects and received several distinctions, among them a D&AD Silver Award. After three years she shortly worked at Studio Petr van Blokland until she founded her own design studio in 1996.

Since then she combines working for both Dutch and German clients with being a lecturer and guest teacher at several graphic design departments and being an occasional member of design juries.

As a paper crazy since art school days she pays special attention to environmental issues of paper and the paper industry. During the past years her journey through the many aspects of sustainability has led to even more encouragement to incorporate sustainable values into corporate business decisions and graphic design education.

Andrea, secretary of the Foundation ED! Academy, lives and works in Haarlem.

Arjan Hilgersom
Arjan Hilgersom (1969) studied graphic design at Academie Minerva (Groningen, The Netherlands) from 1989 to 1994. Together with a fellow-student, he then founded design agency Hansom. They moved to Amsterdam in 1996 and from various collaborations, communications design agency Colombo was established. Hilgersom’s responsibilities as a partner and art director included commissions for educational materials, book covers, magazines and style guides.

A change of direction in 2008 saw him establish Team Hilgersom. As the sole director of the agency, he nurtures an extensive network of specialist creatives. A large number of projects diverse in nature have been successfully completed, working with freelance photographers, illustrators, writers and journalists. Web designers, typographers, film-makers and printers are also involved where necessary.

Sustainability is an important component of the Team Hilgersom philosophy. At the start of the creative process, the designer has the opportunity and the responsibility to make decisions that contribute to a sustainable society. Out of this premise, the ‘Green Quotation’ (Groene Offerte) arose. Working with bureau Autobahn, Hilgersom has created a website offering guidance on sustainable working practices for designers. The Dutch association of designers BNO (Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers) responded enthusiastically when they learned of the project and enabled the realisation and maintenance of the site (www.groeneofferte.nl).

Hilgersom has already started on his next initiative: meedrukken.nl. This advocates a way of designing and printing which uses the full capacity of printing presses, reducing energy needs and (paper) waste. In all stages of print design, the creativity of the designer can provide a sustainable and enduring value.
